“A great conference held at Fanjeaux, in the presence of a multitude of faithful and infidels who had been summoned. The Catholics had prepared several briefs which contained reasons and authorities in support of their faith; but, after comparing them together, they preferred that which the blessed man of God, (Saint) Dominic, had written, and resolved to oppose it to the briefs that the heretics presented on their side. Three arbitrators were chosen by common agreement to judge which party's reasons were the best, and consequently the more solid faith. However, after many speeches, these arbitrators could not agree on a decision, the thought came to them to throw the two briefs into the fire, so that, if one of the two was spared by the flames, it was certain that it contained the true doctrine of the faith. A great fire was then lighted, and the two volumes thrown into it; just as soon, the one of the heretics is consumed: the other, which the blessed man of God had written, Dominic, not only remained intact, but it was pushed away by the flames, in the presence of the whole assembly. We threw it again into the fire, a second and a third time, and many times; the event that recurs clearly manifests where the true faith is and what is the holiness of the one who wrote the book.”
