The Angelus - January 1980
We tremble at the thought that the infiltration of Modernism, that is to say naturalism, may continue in the Church. The consequences of this veritable cancer are the most serious that the Church has had to undergo during the course of her history; that is, the corruption of the faith of numerous bishops, and a great number of priests, monks, and nuns. These clerks reason like the Modernists and Protestants: witness the newly published book Bishops Speak of the Faith of the Catholic Church. The ideas of sanctifying grace, original sin, mortal sin and its consequences, of the expiatory Sacrifice of Our Lord which continues on our altars, are all spoiled, In their place one finds all the errors of Liberalism, of Americanism, of Sillonism, and of Modernism condemned by the Sovereign Pontiffs. Add to that the theology of liberation which is a Marixist interpretation of the Gospel—a sacrilegious and outrageous misinterpretation of Our Lord! . . . Is it not obvious that where the Faith of the Church is, so also is its holiness; where the holiness of the Catholic Church is, there also is the Catholic Church. A church which no longer produces good fruit, which is barren, is no longer the Catholic Church...
This citadel of Satan which has been raised against the citadel of God has caused, unfortunately, many Catholics to lose their faith . . . All these Catholics who have come to terms with the enemy and those who play the game of the enemy—it is these who have penetrated in Rome and it is these who have inspired the Second Vatican Council and all of its consequences . . . Instead of teaching the good and true catechism they teach anything. They place in doubt all the truths of the Church, Rather than teaching the morals of the Church they place in doubt and permit all "experiences." Rather than teaching the faith of the Church they "research" and they place all the principles of the Church in doubt. Thus, our Church is infiltrated. It is in the process of "auto-destruction" as Pope Paul VI said. We must resist. We must hold fast!
The Archbishop Speaks
. . . So we must keep the faith: faith in the divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This is very important and this is why we must follow our Shepherd, Who is Our Lord Jesus Christ. And if it should happen that those who are intermediaries between the Shepherd, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and ourselves, want to turn us away from Him, then we must say no. We shall not accept it. We want to follow Our Lord. We do not want to become Protestants—of those who doubt the divinity of Our Lord. We do not want to be of those who doubt the Resurrection of Our Lord. We do not want to be of those who doubt the Real Presence. . . . We do not want this? . . . In these critical moments, we must remain with that which is surest. We must avoid doubtful things. We must make our stand on things that are certain, absolutely certain, without a thousandth per cent of doubt: our Creed, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Sacraments, devotion to the Most Blessed Virgin. We cannot go wrong there. If we are firmly attached to these things we can work out our salvation. Our Lord willed these things for our salvation. Let us adhere to them with all our heart.
-from a Sunday Sermon
Southern France, 1976
. . . There is that which is the root of Catholic civilization: the comprehension of sacrifice in one's life, in daily life, the understanding of Christian suffering—no longer considering suffering as evil, as an unbearable sorrow, but sharing one's suffering and one's sickness with the sufferings of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in looking upon His Cross . . .
