Note on a meeting of members of the FSSPX with Bishop Vitus Huonder.
On April 17, 2015, the announced meeting between members of the FSSPX and Bishop VH ob took place. of Chur. In this meeting, which took place in French at the priory of Oberriet, were present Mons. VH, Bishop B. Fellay, Fathers Niklaus Pluger and A-M Nély, Mons. A. de Galarreta, Fathers M. Gaudron, JM. Gleize and Marc Jacot.
The theme of the meeting was the ecumenism of Vatican II.
Before tackling this issue, Bishop H. wanted to begin with a statement whose essential points are the following:
-The canonical integration of the SSPX is a great concern of Msgr. H.
-A canonical status is a necessity. Without this status, the influence of the SSPX is minimal because it is marginalized. The conservative bishops want this canonical regularization, without which everyone is against the SSPX.
-Mons. H. thinks that the SSPX does not want the schism. Respect for the authority that has always preserved, proves it.
-The Magisterium must listen to the criticisms and conclusions of the theologians, including those of the SSPX, in a spirit of reciprocal respect. The Magisterium must also see if evolution from Vatican II is in conformity with Tradition.
-The suppression of excommunication and the Summorum Pontificum are signs of goodwill on the part of Rome.
-An agreement with Rome would be a support for the Superior General and for the apostolic work of the SSPX: it would give him the right to request explanations from the Magisterium.
-The Church needs the SSPX for a new evangelization.
-After a possible recognition, the theological issues must continue to be addressed to find solutions.
After this statement by Bishop H., the members of the FSSPX expressed the following points:
-The bottom line is: Is there a problem of faith and doctrine in Vatican II and its reforms? This is the first fundamental question.
- In fact, there is a problem of faith and our canonical situation is only a consequence of this fundamental problem and of the situation of the Church.
-If there was canonical recognition, we should be free to denounce errors, this is impossible in particular, because we would continue to preach against errors and even against the Pope when he propagates these errors.
-Roma has led other traditional communities to silence. The Congregation of Religious is against Tradition: if there is an agreement, it would be the same for us.
- A public criticism of the errors of the Council is necessary. It is not about being silent about the problems of faith.
-Mons. Lefebvre said: that we are accepted as we are. This is a sine qua non condition. But they want to make us change our spirit, so we say no.
The problem of Vatican II ecumenism was addressed below
Is there a satisfactory official interpretation of the subsistit in Dominus Jesus ? We are talking about a presence of the Church in other churches. The Holy Spirit uses other communities. Now, Pius XII says that it is necessary to distinguish between people and communities: people outside the visible Church can receive graces, but not the communities as long as they are, in principle, separated from the Church.
-As proof, the current Pope explains ecumenism always in a false sense, forgetting the Catholic unity that already exists, and speaking of "the unity that must be found".
-What is the cause of this? The decadence of Catholic theology. In the past, theology used clear terms and concepts, those of scholasticism; today it is vague, based on modern philosophies.
-The separate churches are called "means of salvation" as such, which is false.
- No. 11 of Unitatis redintegratio says that we must "preach the truth", but after that there is a trap: we speak of common elements and then of "hierarchy of truths". This leads, in fact, to a false distinction between "essential truths", necessary for salvation, and "accessory truths", not necessary for salvation.
- In Unitatis redintegratio , the Church is called "the general means of salvation", and no longer "necessary means for salvation".
Bishop H., in the course of this discussion, stated that he agreed with these objections: "The Council was very imprecise, we must clarify all that." "For me, ecumenism aims at conversion, without which it has no reason to be." He also admitted: "There are many things to change in the code."
Mons. H. will transmit the dubia to Rome of the FSSPX on ecumenism prepared by Father Gleize for this meeting.
