Statue Left In Pieces Outside St. Mark’s Church In Dorchester

DORCHESTER (CBS) – Another Catholic Church in Boston has been hit by vandalism.

Officers were called to St. Mark’s on Dorchester Avenue around 9 a.m. Sunday after a statue of Jesus out front was broken apart and left in pieces. Boston Police told WBZ-TV there was a second incident at a home across the street where a statue of the Virgin Mary was pulled off a lawn and thrown into a barrel.

Back in the spring, a red substance was splashed on a Virgin Mary statue outside St. Gregory’s in Dorchester four different times.

Two other churches in Hyde Park were also vandalized recently. Back on March 11, police say someone tossed a red substance on a statue at Most Precious Blood Church on Maple Street and on a bench in front of St. Anne’s on West Milton Street.

Police are looking into whether the incidents are connected. There have been no arrests.

“I was wondering if something like that might happen here,” Father Anthony Cusack of St. Mark’s told WBZ-TV Monday. “This was a little different in terms of the m.o. but I was leery something like this might happen and unfortunately it did.”
