“Some districts will do things like they’ll say ‘the student was with an administrator at this time,’ and that administrator, you know, they won’t answer further questions. It’s a little tricky though ... there are a few different ways to do it,” Dawson said.

“A lot of times students don’t want to talk to their parents or guardians about these kinds of issues. It’s those who can’t who are in a dangerous situation, or going to have their college tuition taken away,” she continued.

“Instruction must affirmatively recognize that people have different sexual orientations and must be inclusive of same-sex relationships,” said Dawson, “It is not only bias-free but it is affirmatively inclusive of those folks and relationships.” Dawson also instructed teachers to tell their students that gender is not binary. “There are a bunch of genders,” she said.

Dawson added that all of this material is mandatory. “Schools may not facilitate a selective opt-out just of the queer stuff, just of the LGBTQ stuff in sexual health education ... opting out just of LGBTQ stuff is illegal and should be also impossible,” she said.
