Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.), while discussing his new book, The Case Against Socialism, noted that because of Venezuela's socialist economy, people there are reduced to "literally eating their pets."
He added that self-described socialists Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) promote the ideas of Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot and "get away with it" because "nobody in the media" challenges them on their socialist views.
On CSPAN's AfterWords, Senator Paul said to guest host Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), "Venezuela is just such a disaster. I mean, people literally eating their pets."
"We tell the story [in the book] of a young lady who was a teenage girl, and she has a gang, but her gang is [there] to defend the turf of trash," said Paul. "So, there’s certain garbage receptacles and she keeps people out of them because those are her garbage receptacles to look for food."
“How sad," he said. "People killing rats in the street to try to eat them, pigeons, and it just, it really is a sad thing."
"We have to understand why the world economy got better," thanks to capitalism and freer markets, he said, "and we have to understand why Venezuela’s deteriorating into, you know, chaos – and that’s, I think, part of what the book is doing.
"It’s part of also the debate we should be having up here," said the senator, "and we don’t seem to have it in Congress, is that we don’t develop, we aren’t really talking about which economic system [capitalism vs. socialism] is better."

Paul continued, “And nobody in the media seems to care that what AOC is supporting or what Bernie is supporting is Stalin and Mao and Pol Pot, and all these terrible ideas, and they get away with it because they aren’t challenged."
Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, and Pol Pot were Marxists who believed that socialism was the near-final stage in history that led to communism and an economic utopia on Earth.
In seeking to implement socialism on a grand scale, Stalin's Soviet Union killed 35 million people; Mao Zedong's Communist China killed 65 million people; and Pol Pot's Cambodia killed 1.3 million people.
