Saint Agnes Virgin and Martyr († 304)
Patron of the Children of Mary
Saint Agnes was twelve years old when she was led to the altar of Minerva at Rome and commanded to obey the persecuting laws of Diocletian by offering incense. In the midst of the idolatrous rites she raised her hands to Christ, her Spouse, and made the sign of the life-giving cross. She did not shrink when she was bound hand and foot, though the manacles slipped from her young hands, and the heathens who stood around were moved to tears. Bonds were not needed for her; she hastened gladly to the place of her torture. When the judge saw that pain had no terrors for her, he inflicted a sentence comporting an insult worse than death: she was condemned to be taken to a house of infamy and her clothes stripped off. I have an Angel with me, she said, and he will guard me. Christ, whom you do not know, surrounds me like a wall which cannot be forced. And so it occurred. The Spouse of Virgins revealed, by a miracle, His custody of the pure in heart: her hair grew miraculously to such a length that she was entirely covered by it. The place to which she was taken was illuminated by a brilliant, inexplicable light; and there she knelt down to pray. At that site a Church has been built in honor of this young maiden's victory over impurity. Only an impudent suitor, the cause of her arraignment as a Christian, dared approach her, and her Angel struck him dead at her feet. His father prayed Agnes to raise him up again by her magic arts; she answered that magic was not responsible for his death, but only the young pagan's lack of respect for God. She said she would pray to Him that her Lord's glory might be manifested by the miracle his father requested, and it was granted to her prayer. At length the sentence of death by the sword was passed upon her by a subordinate judge. For a moment she stood erect in prayer, then bowed her neck to the sword, rejoicing that the time of her liberation had arrived. The Angels bore her pure soul to Paradise. A week after her death, Saint Agnes appeared to her parents as they were praying at her tomb; she was amid a choir of virgins clothed in golden robes and crowned with garlands. She begged them not to weep for her as for one dead, telling them rather to rejoice with her in her happiness.

2017 sermon
Fr. Hewko: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, amen. This is the feast of the great Roman, virgin and martyr whom we all know, whose name we all are familiar with, who we love very dearly and pray to. She's in the Canon of the Mass. For centuries and centuries every saint has loved and honored and prayed to her. And now they're with her. That is the great St. Agnes. Agnes in the Greek means purity or chastity. In Latin it means lamb. She truly was the lamb that was chaste, that was pure. This Epistle for this Mass taken from the book of Wisdom, chapter 51, it really shows the heart of St. Agnes. I'll go through this Epistle applying it actually to her life and to her martyrdom. Listen carefully. "I will give glory to Thee O Lord, O King and I will praise Thee, O God my Savior. I will give glory to Thy Name for Thous has been a helper and a protector to me and has preserved my body from destruction, from the snare of the unjust tongue." St. Agnes was 13 yrs. old. The Italian girls mature earlier, so she was very beautiful, and Procopius was the son of the governor of Rome. He was a young man and Agnes caught his eye. He thought, she's a beautiful girl, she's from a good family, she'll make a great wife. She was about 13 and so was Maria Goretti, who was also martyred many centuries later. So, Procopius tried to appeal to her. He tried to send her flowers, he tried to basically ask her out to begin dating. But St. Agnes, her heart was already married. From a young age, she knew her faith, she loved our Lord Jesus Christ. She responded to that grace, because all of us receive that grace to love God above all. To love our Lord above all. She truly gave her whole heart to our Lord and she consecrated herself to Him, as many virgins did and the martyrs. So, Procopius he threw himself on her to win her heart. She finally said to him, these are her words recorded by St. Alphonsus Liguori, "Be gone from me thou food for death. Go away, you, food for death. I am already engaged to another and far better spouse. He is the King of heaven whom I have consecrated my entire being." So, Procopius was of course, was very upset and he kept trying to win her heart. He turned to his father who was governor of Rome and he was curious why such a beautiful girl would turn down such an offer. Because if she marries Procopius she's got it made materially wise. She'll be wealthy, she'll be honored, she'll be in all the Roman parades. She'll have an honorable place at the seat in the coliseum at the big games. How could she possible refuse his offer? One of the right-hand men of the governor, he said to the governor, she is Catholic. Only the Catholics do this crazy thing, give their life to this God, this man who was crucified. When he heard this the governor got very upset. Because, as you know, this was about the year 304, so it's right in the hot time of the persecutions. To be Catholic was against the law. To be Catholic you had to practice the faith basically in hiding otherwise you'll get... well many of them were reported and were led to death. We're still lucky, you know, we can rent a nice hall to have Mass, but the early Catholics, and the Catholics in Ireland, Scotland, England they had to have Mass in hiding. During the persecution in France also, Mass in barns. St. John Vianney grew up going to Mass in a barn in the middle of the night. Also, Mexico, and in Ukraine and in China under the Communists persecutions. So, we still have it good we still have it easy. We think this is hard, but we still have it easy. We're not being hunted down to blood...yet. But in her days, it was. So the great St. Agnes, she was threatened. She boldly replied that she was told, you've got 24 hrs. to make up your mind. You're either gonna burn incense to the gods and be a patriot to your country or you're going to stay stubbornly in your Catholic faith and face the consequences. So, he thought I'll be nice to her and we'll give her 24 hrs. She said, "I don't need 24 hrs." She said, I'm already resolved to have no other spouse than Jesus Christ, and neither torments nor death can frighten me, a she was most anxious to lay down her life for our Lord. They put her through three main tortures. The first was to drag her hand cuffed before the idols. She would refuse to burn incense to the gods. All she had to do was throw 1 grain. Just one grain, that's all she had to do, and she'd be set free. Most people today will say, well what's the big deal? You just burn a piece of incense and get on with real life. Most people would do it if it meant death or burning incense. But this is the difference between the children of the light and the children of the darkness. This is the difference between those who really love our Lord and those who don't. Always remember and never forget, liberalism is burning incense to the false gods. Catholic liberalism is the worst enemy of the Church. We swim in it now. We swim in it. All the traditional Catholics, they're not worried. Bishop Fellay says the new mass is legitimate. Well big deal one grain of incense to the enemies of Christ. What's the big deal? He accepts Vat. II now in the Doctrinal Declaration. He has never rejected this, he has never condemned it. It overthrows the whole work of Archbishop Lefebvre. It overthrows the whole stand and position of the rock of tradition on which traditional Catholics stand. It's all been removed. And people really don't care. That's not 1 grain of incense. That Doctrinal Declaration is a truck load of incense to the false gods of liberty, equality and fraternity! All the errors condemned by the Church. Let's learn from this great St. Agnes. She would not budge on the faith. Not 1 grain of incense. Do you and I love our Lord that much? It's a special grace. What did she do? She made the sign of the cross as best she could with her hand cuffs. She shouted out that she adored only the Crucified Spouse, the true God, Jesus Christ. Now did Cardinal Dolan do this at the inauguration of Pres. Trump? Cardinal Dolan had the chance to tell the whole United States Jesus Christ the King is the only solution to all the American problems and all the problems in the modern world. What did he do? He read some ecumenical prayer from King Solomon which is very pleasing to the Jews. At least he made the sign of the Cross. But Jesus Christ was not even mentioned at the inauguration of our new president. We're relieved we have Trump instead of the other option. Thank God! But where was our Lord Jesus Christ on the inauguration day? He's the cornerstone of all society. He's the Creator of all things. How can man build their governments and elect their presidents and pass laws without any reference to Jesus Christ the King? It's an insult to the true God. It's unbelievable we can sit back and watch this happen, but it's the new religion of the modern world. Like in Rome, many Gods have a place. But the true God - out of place. The truth - don't even mention it. So Cardinal Dolan, to his shame, was ashamed of Christ the King and did not even mention His Name. Now Trump isn't Catholic, we pray for his conversion. Maybe being an honest man that he seems to be, if he really did convert, we can pray for that. If he's standing up to all the rotten media, and a lot of the rottenness is Washington, maybe he'll have the grace to stand up to all the rottenness of the modern world. If they hate him now, they're gonna hate him twice as much if he ever converted. We have to pray for that. He is now the President of the United States, he has the authority from God. His authority is from Jesus Christ the King, not from the people as he said. He's wrong. That's a heresy. That's wrong. His authority comes from God and he's going to answer to Christ the King for how he uses his authority. We have to pray for him. Pray for his conversion. But learn from St. Agnes, this 13 year old girl. What do they want to do now? They want to drag her to a house of prostitution. They want to drag her into the mud. St. Lucy was made immovable. They had to take 12 oxen and tie her up and pull her, but she wouldn't budge. All their strongest Roman soldiers, and all the ropes and chains, they couldn't even move St. Lucy. But with St. Agnes they dragged her in. Anyone who approached her, they were over-awed by the beauty of the saint, the holiness about her. There was only one young man, probably Procopius, who tried to touch her. Here's what happened. "The impure wretch soon experienced the jealousy with which the spouse of virgins, our Lord Jesus Christ, defends His own. For a flash of lightning struck him blind and he fell as if dead upon the ground. While his friends were trying to afford him some relief, and were already bewailing him as dead, St. Agnes prayed for him. When she did this he instantly recovered and he received his sight again." The false priests, the idolatrous priests, they accused her of working magic. She was sentenced to be burned alive. Unlike St. Joan of Arc, the flames were going all around her and they never touched her. In fact, St. Alphonsus says some of the flames actually killed some of the Roman guards and burnt them alive. Kind of grabbed them and burnt them. So, she was also untouched miraculously from the flames. Finally, she would be beheaded. St. Agnes, her head was cut off. The executioner was shaking. He didn't want to cut off the head of such a harmless, beautiful girl. St. Agnes prompted him. She said, basically, 'Hurry up. Destroy my body which could give pleasure to others to the offending of my Divine Spouse. Don't fear to give me death which shall bring me the commencement of eternal life." She raised her head to heaven and then she laid her head down, and her head was struck off. Her soul went to its crown in heaven. She went straight to heaven. She died in 304. Later the Popes would build a Church on the spot she was buried. A thousand years later they found her relics under the High Altar. St. Agnes is venerated for centuries and centuries. One time her mother and father were watching at her grave. They were praying at her grave. They fell asleep there. They saw St. Agnes appear to them. She said to her parents, "My father and mother, don't weep for me as though I were dead. For now, these virgins and I live together in Him whose love was my whole life upon earth." Some years after St. Constance, the daughter of Constantine, she would also go to the tomb and pray, because she had a massive ulcer on her body. The glorious St. Constance was instantly cured through St. Agnes. St. Agnes told her, "Constance be of good courage. Believe in Jesus Christ the Son of God and He will cure thee." Perhaps that led to her father, Constantine's conversion later. Let's salute St. Agnes. As the prayer says in the Epistle: "Thou has been my helper and Thou has delivered me according to the multitude of Thy mercies. Out of the hands of them that sought my life, and from the gates of affliction which encompassed me about; from the oppression of the flame which surrounded me, in the midst of the fire I was not burnt." This applies to her literally. "From the depths of the belly of hell, and from an unclean tongue, and from lying words, from an unjust king, and from a slanderous tongue, deliver my soul. My soul shall praise the Lord even to death because Thou O Lord art God and deliverest those that wait for Thee and savest them out of the hands of the gentiles of the nations." The great St. Agnes, what a model for our times when men so easily compromise the faith. We're living now, as you know, in one of the greatest attacks on the Holy, Catholic Faith. Archbishop Lefebvre, he saw it. He lived through it. He warned us. All these offers of Rome, all these deals that Rome wants to give, Latin Mass, seminaries, even a bishop. But he said all these are maneuvers. Maneuvers to trap us to accept Vat. II, to accept the new Mass, to compromise in some way. Just burn a few little grains of incense and have a deal. Be recognized and everything will be at peace. But how can there be peace without the truth? How can there be peace? True obedience under Popes that disobey all the tradition. Pope Francis, Pope Benedict, Pope John Paul II, Paul the VI, John the XXIII, all of them they were Popes. They were Vicars of Christ. Some of them have already gone to their eternal judgement, and for some of them it does not look good. Paul the VI was rotting already even during his viewing. The Swiss Guards were passing out at the stench of his body. Recently they say that John Paul II, about a month ago they exhumed his body. Like John the XXIII they're saying he's incorrupt. They're claiming miracles to justify the new Mass and the new Vat II religion. But remember what the mortician said about John XXIII, and I'm sure they did the same with Pope John Paul II, he said he's so pumped up with chemicals he should be incorrupt for the next hundred years. These phony miracles. They're trying to claim miracles. Eucharistic miracles, phony apparitions, phony incorrupt saints, to support a phony mass. What are the fruits of these phony miracles? More sacrileges, communions in the hand, more attendance at the new mass. No huge lines for confessions. No real conversion to the true Catholic faith. This false religion needs its false miracles. And they're making them. They disregarded all the traditional testing for true and real miracles. Dear faithful let me just remind you of some of these great words from Fr. de Cacqueray. Fr. de Cacqueray was scolded by Bishop Fellay for putting out this letter. Bishop Fellay at first gave him permission. This was back in 2011. The same year when Pope Benedict held the 3rd Assisi meeting of all the false religions. You remember that? Scandal of scandals he had an atheist speak at the podium. The atheist said I want to thank Pope Benedict for inviting me to represent all those who don't believe in God. Absolute scandal, absolute blasphemy against the true God. To err is human but to persevere in error is diabolical. This applies to any of us if we fall into error and don't correct it, especially priests and bishops. That's why, one of the laymen, about 2 yrs. ago face to face Bishop Fellay in a private meeting he asked him straightforward, "Do you find anything wrong in the Doctrinal Declaration that you signed and sent to Pope Benedict XVI?" Bishop Fellay said, "No, I find nothing wrong with it." That confirms, to make an error is human but to persevere in error is diabolical. That Doctrinal Declaration and all the interviews and all the steps taken to more and more compromise within the new-SSPX are all proof. They accept the new mass is legitimate, accept Vat II in the so-called 'light of tradition', accept the new profession of faith, accept the new Code of Canon law. This is so grave this is so serious because it's doctrinal. It's a new profession of a new faith. So where are all the priests to stand up and rise up to defend the traditional Catholic Faith? Where's all the faithful to react? They're all saying, 'Well I don't see the new Mass. Our priests still say the Latin Mass and I hear good sermons.' But I'll tell you what, you're not going to hear any more sermons in the new-SSPX condemning the agreement with Rome. Bishop Fellay has forbidden it under big penalties. If any priest tomorrow- I would love to see Fr. Ken Novak, who knows better, cause we're classmates. He knows better and I know he does. I would love to see him tomorrow get in the pulpit and condemn these steps toward the agreement with Rome, especially the compromise on the Faith of 2012 in the Doctrinal Declaration. His head would be rolling before he would even get his foot off the pulpit. That's how fast they would move. He'd be yanked out of there so fast. If he didn't join the resistance he'd be put in some hole to meditate the rest of his days. This is what we're dealing with. It's truly diabolical. Why aren't they having the new Mass today and tomorrow? Because as Bishop Fellay told Pope Benedict, 'I have to work very slowly to convince the faithful and the priests to accept this new direction.' It fits perfectly with Pope Benedict, who himself said, that Vat. II was implemented too quickly. It should have been done more slowly. Then they wouldn't have these pain in the neck resistance Bishops and Priests, like Archbishop Lefebvre and all the many, many hundreds of independent priests all over the world who stayed faithful with the traditional Mass. Many of you people know some of these good old priests. You should hear the great talk of Fr. Gommar De Pauw back in 1967. He was already telling the faithful, "Which church are you going to stay with? The Conciliar church or the Catholic Church of all time. Take your pick. " This is 1967! This is even before Archbishop Lefebvre founded the SSPX. We had a good priest in the U.S. raising the banner of the faith. He saw right through it, Fr. Gommar De Pauw. Pray for his soul. He's died since. All these old warriors have died since. Now there's no more of these old first generation resistance. There's no more of the first generation Catholics who fought against the destruction of our Catholic Faith and our Mass. The enemies of Christ know who's left. It's the second and third generation. The one's who grew up with tradition. The kids and the boys and girls who were confirmed by Archbishop Lefebvre, grew up with Traditional Latin Mass, grew up with Traditional Sacraments, who didn't read, who didn't really understand the fight of Tradition against the liberalism of the last four or five hundred years. So now this 2nd and 3rd generation they're not fighting. They got their Mass, they got their sacraments. Bishop Fellay burnt incense to the false Gods of Vat. II - Big Deal! That's why many are sliding, to their destruction. Many are sliding. Let me return to some of these great words of Fr. de Cacqueray. Fr. de Cacqueray did not like what Bishop Fellay was doing. He told Fr. Pfeiffer that he was scolded sharply for sending out this letter publicly, which is an excellent letter. He's retired, well I say retired. He's gone into the Carthusian monks in France. I hope he's not hiding his head in the sand. Cause that's an easier thing to do. Pray for Fr. de Fr. de Cacqueray because if he really did what a priest should do, he should speak out publicly against all this horrible compromise of the Faith happening at the leadership of the Society. We are also bound to speak out against the errors of Bishop Fellay and now Bishop Williamson. I wish it wasn't happening but it's true. People are saying well it's all strife and fighting and discord. Well if we follow persons, yes, that makes sense. But if we follow Christ and the Catholic Church of tradition, and the Popes of tradition and Archbishop Lefebvre's clear stand there's no confusion. The faith is the same always, yesterday, today, forever. It's always beautiful, always victorious, always the same. It doesn't change. So where does the confusion come? The confusion comes if I love a person more than the faith. If I follow a person, whether he be bishop or priest, pope, a cardinal. If I put a person above the faith, then yeah, you're gonna be confused. Our Lord doesn't want you to love anyone more than He. He's the only true God. Like St. Agnes, we gotta be ready to lay down our life. Many of you, I know you have lost family, you've lost friends, you've lost social gatherings you've lost certain esteem, for the faith. And we gotta be ready to go to death. That's the price. We didn't ask for this. We didn't ask for Vat II, we didn't ask for Bishop Fellay to compromise. We didn't ask for Bishop Williamson to start saying that the new mass gives grace and you can go to it if it fulfills you needs. And now you can go to the sedevacantist Mass and even the Anglican Church has some truth in it. We didn't ask them to say that. We've asked them to retract these scandalous statements. We've asked them to fix their errors because to err is human. But to persevere in error and not retract and not correct is diabolical. This is what we're dealing with. We have to be just as persevering in the truth, by the grace of God and the help of the Virgin Mary and all the saints. You youngsters, you little five, six, seven, eight years old, and you beautiful young ladies, and little Seth in his hi-back, you are the next generation to fight. Thank God you have good parents who are doing what they're doing, because you have a better chance to keep the faith in 20 years. All the parents who are sliding with the new religion and the new stand of the SSPX, their kids aren't gonna fight. Their parents didn't fight, they're not gonna fight. In ten years they'll be probably saying the new Mass on these altars or a new hybrid mass facing the altar with English Epistle, English Gospel and all the mixed match. [from Fr. de Cacqueray letter] "Is this the peace of Jesus Christ? Of the One who died on the Cross to affirm His Divinity? The peace of Christ is very different. As far removed from this masonic idea of peace, as charity is from fraternity. The peace of Christ is peace with God, the fruit of the redemption of souls by the blood of His Son and men's rejection of sin." Was this mentioned by Trump and all those the other day?(Trump inauguration) "As for civil peace communicated by Christ, it is nothing else than the fruit of Christian civilization modeled by Catholic faith and charity. But if the Triune God and the sacred humanity of Christ are gravely offended by this invitation to sin, (that is gathering all the world religions to pray) the Immaculate spouse of Christ as one Catholic Church is humiliated publicly." Pope Francis just did this again humiliating the Catholic Church again and again and again. He had that horrible scandalous prayer meeting with the Lutherans. Ever since he's told the Carmelites and the contemplative orders of the Church the gotta change their habits, change their statutes and stop being contemplative orders. As one modernist Bishop said when he walked in to visit one of these convents, he said it's too quiet in here, something's wrong. [reading from letter] "Mocked is the teaching of the Apostles, Popes, Fathers of the Church, the saints, the martyrs and the Catholic princes and heroes. Mocked is the teaching of the psalmist, according to whom all the gods of the gentiles are devils. Mocked, the formal order of St. John not to greet heretics. Mocked is the teaching of Pope Gregory XVI and Pius IX, for whom freedom of conscience is a delirium. Mocked is the formal prohibition by Popes Leo XIII and Pius XI to organize or participate in inter religious congresses. Mocked is the martyrdom of St. Polyuptus, refusing to sacrifice to idols, as did St. Agnes. Mocked is the example of St. Francis de Sales writing his controversies to convert protestant heretics. Mocked the thousand of missionaries who gave up everything for the salvation of the souls of infidels. Mocked by all this ecumenism is the heroic deed of Charles Martel halting Islam at Poitiers in France. Or of Godfrey of Bouillon forcing his way by lance and sword into Jerusalem. Mocked is St. Louis of France who punished blasphemy. " So, all this new religion mocks the old. That's why we can have nothing to do with this Vat. II church. He concludes with his great words and I'll conclude with this and we'll continue with Holy Mass. He quotes St. Pius X saying what is the true charity. "But Catholic doctrine tells us that the primary duty of charity does not lie in the toleration of false ideas." At the inauguration of Pres. Trump, that's all we saw. A Jew read a prayer, a Catholic read a prayer, a Lutheran read a prayer and all these phony religions read a prayer. What happened to the first Commandment? I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have strange Gods before me. We saw all Gods honored on inauguration day. That bodes not well for our future. "True charity is not in the toleration of false ideas however sincere they may be, says St. Pius X. Nor in the theoretical or practical indifference towards the errors and vices in which we see our brethren plunged but, in the zeal for their intellectual and moral improvement, as well as for their material well- being, is the true charity. Catholic doctrine further tells us that love for our neighbor flows from the love of God who is Father to all and the goal of the whole human family and in Jesus Christ whose members we are. To the point that in doing good to others we are doing good to Jesus Christ Himself. Any other kind of love is sheer illusion, sterile and fleeting." - St. Pius X [Fr. de Cacqueray letter] Then he concludes- "So then what Church do we belong to? To the Church of St. Polycarp of Smyrna who retorted to the heretic Marcion who had asked him if he recognized him. St. Polycarp said to him, "Yes I recognize you as the devil's elder son." Do we belong to the Church of St. Martin who broke the idols and felled the sacred trees of our country side of France? Do we belong to the Church of St. Bernard who preached a crusade to our forefathers telling them that to fight like a lion on the field and kill the Muslims would be a great crown in heaven? Do we belong to the Church of St. Pius V who not only prayed the Rosary but summoned the Christian princes to make war against the Mohammedans?" Remember the great battle of Lepanto! "Do we belong to the Church of the saints and martyrs? Or, do we belong to the church of the Pilate's, the Judas', the Caushaun's (sp) the Lamonaize's (sp) the Teilhard de Chardin's every ready to please the world and deliver Christ and His disciples to their detractors? What church do we belong to? The liberal, modernist, conciliar church or the Catholic Church of all time? Take your pick. If you take the easier route, you'll go with the new direction." You'll back the new direction of Bishop Fellay and the false errors now being taught by the fake resistance. But if we stay with the Catholic Church - yeah, it's harder. We have to stand almost alone with the Virgin Mary at the foot of the Cross with a lot of spit, a lot of attacks a lot of detraction and false accusations etc, etc. What else is new? But we stand there joyfully. We stand there with happy hearts cause that's where we need to be. There's no other place to be but with Jesus Crucified and with all the Popes of tradition, all the saints, all the martyrs. Two thousand years of our glorious Catholic Church history. Better to be on the side of all them then to have all the pleasures and applause of the world and turn our back to Christ the King. Cause who honors Me before men, I will honor before my Father. Who does not know Me before men I will not recognize you before My Father. And terrible would be those words forever echoing in the damns’ head - Depart from Me ye cursed, depart from Me ye cursed. So let's stay close to our Lord and let's pick up the weapons and let's continue to fight with the help of the Virgin Mary, this hundred years after Fatima. Let's really pray well the Rosary asking our Lady for miracles. We need miracles of our day. Miracles for the Pope to convert and do his duty. Miracles for a Catholic president. Miracles for our Bishops to just do their duty as bishops. Miracles for priests to be priests and defend the truth instead of worrying about whether or not they're going to lose their good name or their pension, but true followers of Christ. And you, dear faithful fight on in the path of our ancestors who had often bloody paths of martyrdom. That is the happy trail which leads straight to heaven. So, let's carry our cross begging Our Lady to carry it faithfully to the end. O Mary conceived without sin. Pray for us who have recourse to thee. O Mary conceived without sin. Pray for us who have recourse to thee. O Mary conceived without sin. Pray for us who have recourse to thee. In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen
