Only he who perseveres till the end shall be saved.
In Regards to Liberius even though he was under pressure so were the several million martyrs before him in the 300 years before he was born. So were the several million martyrs after him.
It says in the sacrament of confirmation the time will come when you're going to be under pressure. The time is going to come when God is going to allow you to experience a test. Are you going to stand for the faith in difficult circumstances? Are you going to stand for the faith when they persecute you? Are you going to stand for the faith when they tell you to burn incense before the idols or to burn incense before the anti-Christ?
Who is going to stand for the faith? There will be many who were good all their lives, many who were faithful all their lives that will imitate Liberius.
During the same time was a priest by the name of Ozimus. Ozimus also was a very faithful priest fighting against Arianism. He was stronger than Athanasius. He was in his 80's and they began to torture him and say to him you must accept Arianism. After he was tortured he accepted Arianism, he preached it and he died an Arian. All those years a faithful Catholic, and in his 80's he turned against God. Hence he is not a saint. He may have lost his soul. And how many others?
Therefore God has allowed us to know some of these examples in history that there are men that are good. We may good today,we may be holy today, we may be faithful today, we may be doing the work of God today. But what about tomorrow? Am I guaranteed to be a good priest tomorrow? Am I guaranteed to be a good Catholic tomorrow? Am I guaranteed to be a saint tomorrow? Absolutely not, and all the way to the very end. At the very last moment like Ozimus or the very end of life like Liberius it is very possible to turn against God.
Therefore we must work out our salvation in fear and trembling. No matter how many years, - "I've been faithful for 5 yrs. I've been faithful for 50 yrs. I've been faithful for 90 yrs."
Ozimus was faithful for 80 yrs. Only he who perseveres till the end shall be saved. - Christ emphasizes that Himself.
